Choosing The Right Bait To Take Fishing
It is a cool summer morning; you decide to go see if anything is biting. Once you have made the decision to go fishing, there are a few questions that you need to ask yourself before heading out. Where will you go fishing? What kind of fish are you going for? What type of bait will you need to land your catch? Answering these questions before hand will help to ensure a pleasurable experience on or near the water. After you have determined where to fish and what to fish for, you can decide what type of bait to use.
There are basically three types of bait to choose from, prepared bait, artificial bait, and live bait. Prepared bait includes cheese balls, hotdogs, stink baits, and salmon eggs. Artificial bait is things like lures, flies, rubber worms, spinners and streamers. Live bait is my preferred option and live bait is just that, alive! Night crawlers, insects, larvae, grasshoppers and crickets are among the most popular kinds of live bait.
If you are fishing for bullhead, you might want to try leaf worms or night crawlers, crayfish is also attractive bait. Catfish seem to be most attracted to worms or the prepared baits. I find that cheese balls work the best for me, but sometimes I will switch it up and use hot dogs. When fishing for perch I have the best luck with minnows and insects. For striped bass I prefer using shad or spinners. They seem to work the best in landing the perfect fish. Finally, for my favorite fish, the trout, I recommend salmon eggs or a favorite lure. The fish are attracted to the bright colors.
Whatever bait you choose or whichever fish is your pleasure, go out and catch your limit. Enjoy the day, and please be mindful of local fishing regulations.
